Got Slugs?

Are you currently having slug problems or just worried about the future? Don't worry, you're not the first and you're not alone.

Slugs and snails are technically mollusks, not insects. You know they have been around from the large holes in your plants' leaves and the slime they leave behind. The feeding/damage is usually done at night or on overcast and rainy days. Slugs hide during the day, so don't bother trying to catch them in the act before about 10:00pm.

There are quite a few ways to control slugs and snails. An easy anti-slug mixture is 1 part ammonia to 5 parts water. Simply spray the mixture on slugs and they'll die.

Another similar technique involves a substance that is a potent neurotoxin to all mollusks. What's that substance? Caffeine. Yes, the same stuff that you have every morning in your cup of coffee. Just spray your strongest coffee on the slimy buggers at night.

If these suggestions don't take care of your slug problem, or you just want alternatives, feel free to leave a comment or e-mail.

The other tried-and-true for slugs is beer. Put an inch or so of cheap beer in a container and bury the container almost up to its lip. The slugs will crawl in and die. Empty the container into the compost pile and repeat.

(If you let it sit for a few days it gets moldy and smelly and gross!)

Absolutely! This way is very effective, I've used it personally. You can cut openings on the sides of the container so you don't need to bury the whole thing.

I also find that crushed up horse chestnuts work. We collect them in the autumn and then freeze them till the summer months.

Very interesting! That's a new technique to me. I'll have to try it out.
